Background of the study
University canteens in Minna LGA play a vital role in providing nutritious meals to students and staff, yet they often face challenges related to operational inefficiencies, inventory mismanagement, and long waiting times. Traditional canteen management systems, which rely on manual record-keeping and static ordering processes, are frequently unable to cope with the dynamic demands of a busy university environment. The implementation of IoT-based smart canteen management systems offers a modern solution by integrating sensor technology, real-time data analytics, and automated inventory control. These systems enable seamless tracking of food stock levels, monitor sales data, and optimize ordering processes to ensure timely replenishment and reduce waste (Adamu, 2023). By utilizing real-time feedback, the system can adjust menus and ordering schedules dynamically, enhancing customer satisfaction and operational efficiency. The data collected through these systems also provides valuable insights into consumer behavior and peak demand periods, allowing canteen managers to plan resources more effectively (Ibrahim, 2024). Furthermore, the integration of digital payment systems with IoT technology streamlines transactions, reducing wait times and minimizing errors in billing. Despite the clear advantages, the implementation of IoT-based canteen management systems faces challenges such as high installation costs, integration with existing infrastructure, and the need for user training (Adamu, 2023). This study aims to assess the feasibility and impact of deploying such a system in university canteens in Minna LGA, focusing on its potential to enhance service delivery, reduce operational costs, and improve overall customer experience.
Statement of the problem
University canteen operations in Minna LGA are hindered by inefficient management practices that lead to issues such as food wastage, inaccurate inventory tracking, and prolonged waiting periods for customers. Traditional manual systems are unable to provide real-time data on stock levels and customer flow, resulting in delays and suboptimal resource allocation (Ibrahim, 2024). The lack of an integrated management system contributes to errors in order processing and billing, negatively impacting customer satisfaction and canteen revenue. Although IoT-based smart management systems have the potential to address these challenges through automation and real-time monitoring, their implementation is limited by factors such as high setup costs, integration difficulties with legacy systems, and insufficient training for staff (Adamu, 2023). Additionally, the variability in daily consumer demand and fluctuating supply chain conditions further complicate the effective operation of these systems. This study seeks to investigate the barriers to the effective implementation of IoT-based canteen management systems and evaluate their impact on improving operational efficiency and customer service in university settings. By identifying the technical and operational challenges, the research aims to develop recommendations that can facilitate a smoother transition to a digital management framework and ultimately enhance the performance of university canteens in Minna LGA (Ibrahim, 2024).
